A shoppers’ parade followed this Republic day

This republic day had many more colors to offer apart from the tri-color. The end-of-season sales were not yet over when a surge in the sales figures of the retailers was recorded as the whole nation celebrated Republic day with heavy discount offers. From food, electronics to woollen clothes, the big retailers sales was as high as eight times the usual sales according to industry estimates.


Tata's Star Baazar came out with Republic Week Carnival with flat 70 percent discount on clothing and Big Bazar celebrated Sabse Sastha 5 Din from 23rd to 27thJanuary. A discount of 50 percent on 200 brands was offered at Central from Future Group.

Hypercity promoted additional 26 percent discount on 26 selected items in 26 pe 26 along with Hyper sale  which offered 50 percent discount the whole month. While Pantaloon offered flat 50 percent off, for Big Life it's 40 percent and for Levi's and Wrangler it's 20 - 30 percent.

Maruti Suzuki offered Rs 4,000 worth of additions and Rs 60,000 worth of benefits to the buyers while at Hyundai the discounts and benefits summed up to Rs. 35000 - 40000 on small cars and sedans.

The average discounts for items from electronic items to clothing stood at 40 - 50 percent according to Mr. Rohit Sahu, store manager at Vishal Mega Mart.

If so much for retail giants, ecommerce players were not far behind. Discount offers came pouring in from Indiatimes shopping, Flipkart, FirstCry, Pepperfry, Yebhi, Deals And You, Myntra.com, Snapdeal, Fashionara, Zovi etc. Added to the list were the flight and hotel booking sites cleartip, yatra.com, travelguru to make the best use of the occasion with diverse range of discounts.

"Consumers are not only buying larger packs and upsizing but also upgrading," said Devendra Chawla, president of Future Group's Big Bazaar. The trend has been set to opt for a premium brand among the consumers, thanks to the narrowing price gap.

While Republic day falling on a weekend was cited as one of the reasons, a Delhi-based Maruti Suzuki dealer said, The Republic Day offers are better than last year's as it has coincided with the marriage season, which is expected to extend up to February. We have seen some heavy bookings in the last few days.
